Queenstown Day Two: An unexpected adventure & a Queenstown institution

It was a super early wakeup call of 5.30 am for us, as I had booked a half-day scenic flight and cruise package to stunning Milford Sound. As you would probably know, scenic flights are subject to having good weather and we had to call to confirm if our tour could go ahead. Unfortunately, due to some terrible weather, it wasn’t able to run today. I had intentionally scheduled this trip for the beginning of our week away just in case this happened. Luckily we were able to reschedule for later in the week. Not wanting the morning to go to waste, and because we were all already awake and dressed we headed into town to find an alternative activity for the morning.

We stumbled upon the Shotover Canyon Fox and it looked awesome. When I was in Queenstown in 2010 I had done the Canyon swing and had a great time and this was a new attraction at the same location so without hesitation, we booked ourselves and boarded the bus to take us there. After hauling my unfit ass up the hill to where the flying fox was located, we were strapped into safety harnesses and given some instructions on what to do (or what not to do). After mustering the courage we took flying leaps and zoomed across the canyon on the flying fox. After I stopped screaming and opened my eyes the view was just incredible. If you have ever wondered if it is terrifying to run off the side of a mountain, yes it is. But it is also exhilarating and I highly recommend trying it while you are in Queenstown. If you don’t manage to open your eyes for the first trip across, try and do it on the slightly less insane return trip across the canyon.

We had worked up quite an appetite by the time we arrived back in town and we headed to Fergburger for lunch. Fergburger is an absolute Queenstown institution and an absolute must-try when you are here. It is always busy even though they are open 24 hours a day. I loved their chicken and bacon burger, but whatever you are into they will have it and it will be excellent. Make sure you aren’t in a rush when you come here, as you will likely be waiting for the best part of an hour to order and get your food.

Having had enough adrenaline for the day, we headed to the waterfront markets where local makers and artists had all sorts of stalls selling their wares. This wasn’t just a typical, touristy market, there were some really amazing and special things available here and if you are in town on a weekend you should definitely plan to spend an hour or two checking it out. I managed to get some great souvenirs here at a really reasonable price.

After the markets we all headed back to the hotel for a nap, not sure if it was all that jumping off mountains or the giant burger but we were absolutely zapped!

Luckily, I had booked us quite a late dinner at Botswana Butchery. We all had steaks and we all really enjoyed them. Botswana butchery is a stylish restaurant right on the lake. A little pricey but definitely worth checking out if you are a meat lover but maybe not the place for you if you are a vegetarian/vegan.
