Today adrenaline was firmly back on our agenda!
We grabbed some breakfast from Joe’s garage (which was a really cool spot that we would have loved to spend more time in if we could) and headed over to the station building to check in for today’s activities of the Shotover Jet Boat and White Water Rafting!
The Shotover Jet is super famous and known as the world’s most exciting boat ride. The boat ride happens in the Shotover canyon, so you have massive stone walls on each side of you and some very shallow water in parts and the jet boat blasts through and does spins and stuff that bring you very close to the rocks. Not gonna lie, some people have died doing it but what a way to go!! You absolutely must do the Shotover Jet when visiting Queenstown!
We loved the jet boat ride so much that when they offered us another ride we all jumped it all and went again. You will definitely get wet doing this activity, but they do give you ponchos to try and keep you as dry as possible.
As if that wasn’t enough adrenaline for the day, the next activity on the cards for today was White Water Rafting. After wiggling into our super attractive wetsuits and getting some instructions from our guides, we hit the river. We paddled through a number of rapids that got increasingly bigger and faster and a few of us fell out the boat. It is easy enough to get back in with the assistance from your guide and those lucky enough to remain in the boat but it will wake you up - it is chilly!
Once you make it to the end of the rafting course there are warm showers and even saunas available for you to get dry and warm before being transported back to Queenstown.
We were super exhausted from the day’s activities so went back to the hotel for a mid-afternoon nap.
Tonight’s treat was a trip to the Onsen Hot Pools for a sunset hot pool experience. This place is the opposite of adrenaline-inducing, it is all about absolute relaxation and we were super glad to soak our aching rafting muscles in one of their signature Japanese tubs. Once you are seated in your hot tub you can open up the transparent roller door to experience the spectacular sunset view over the mountains. It costs a bit more to do it at sunset, but I think it is totally worth it. Feeling very relaxed and sleepy we headed back to our hotel and fell into bed.
N.B. There are no photos of the Shotover jet, white water rafting or the hot pools as our phones had to be safely stored in lockers for these activities :( Please enjoy these pics we took around town on the same day instead...
