Today we were heading out of Queenstown to the town of Te Anau. After a quick and delicious breakfast at Fergbaker (right next door to Fergburger), we picked up our hire car from Hertz when they opened and hit the road. It is a beautiful (if a bit windy) drive around the mountain roads and you will come across some absolutely stunning views. At one point we even found an area where there was snow on the ground, so we jumped out for a leg stretch and to get some happy snaps in the snow.
The town of Te Anau is quite small and we arrived around lunchtime. We popped into the local pub to fill our bellies before heading down to the lakefront to check in for our trip to the Te Anau Glowworm Caves. There are glow worm tours and then there are glow worm tours (trust me, I have done a few and this is by far the best I have experienced).
After a boat trip across the lake, we arrived at the entry to the caves, at this point the group was broken up into multiple smaller groups. The caves are spectacular and as there is a river running through it there are whirlpools and a roaring waterfall to see. However, the most special part is when you board a tiny boat in pitch-black darkness with your small group and glide into the glowworm grotto. There were thousands of glow worms inside the grotto and the sight of them is like a spectacular night sky.
You will need to bring a warm jumper or jacket, as it is quite chilly in the caves and it would be a good idea to also bring some insect repellent as there were quite a few insecty, bitey things on the way into the cave.
After the return boat trip across the lake, we jumped in the car and headed back to Queenstown, stopping to admire the view at plenty of places along the way.
By the time we got back into Queenstown we were pretty hungry but also quite tired. As we had the hire car we could explore a bit further and discovered Pedro’s House of Lamb and OMG we were so glad we did. It is not big or fancy and they only have one thing on the menu (their signature lamb and potatoes). We got takeaway and took it back to our hotel and it was the best lamb we have ever eaten. We still regularly bring it up to this day. Soon after using our one night with a hire car to pick it up ourselves, we discovered they also do delivery. Do yourself a favour and make sure you try it while you are here.
