Cairns & Port Douglas Day Four - A Rainforest Adventure

Writer: EmmaEmma

Another day - another adventure!

Today we were heading to Kuranda for a rainforest adventure. Kuranda is actually much closer to Cairns but our days in Cairns were pretty full already so we decided to do the trip from Port Douglas instead. I would have loved to take the Kuranda Skyrail

(gondola) up but this was another COVID casualty and not operating when we were there. I do believe it has since reopened though!

The drive was quite pretty and we arrived at Kuranda around 10 am. As we were a bit early and not much was open yet we headed to the Australian Butterfly sanctuary and had all the butterflies to ourselves for about 30 minutes. I had a half-price voucher to get in here, so it was only $10 each which felt worth it.

After we were all butterflied out we headed the main event for the day - a two-hour private quad bike tour through the rainforest with Kuranda Rainforest journeys. We were met by our guide and given our helmets and bikes and a few minutes to get a hang of how the bikes worked. Once he was happy we weren’t going to kill ourselves we headed into the rainforest to begin the tour. For the next two hours, we were shown around the property stopping to look at trees, plants, beautiful views and a tropical fruit plantation. We didn’t manage to see a Cassowary, though we were told most people do. Our favourite part was the two creek crossings on the quad bikes.

We had worked up an appetite so we headed back into Kuranda town to find some lunch. Kuranda seems to be a town that is open Wednesday - Sunday and we were there on a Tuesday, so not a lot was open. We managed to find a tasty lunch at German Tucker Kuranda. We really would have liked to be able to look at all the great shops but nothing was open, so we headed back to Port Douglas earlier than we planned.

We spent the afternoon splashing around in the pool at the hotel, which we had totally to ourselves.

We had dinner at the Port Douglas surf club, which is on Four Mile Beach and has laid back pub meals and drinks at great prices and you get a great view.
