Big things road trip day ten - Rubyvale to Carnarvon Gorge

Writer: EmmaEmma

After brekkie, we hit the road to check out all the "Big Things" that the Gemfields area had to offer. Just as I was posing with the "Big Miner Bobby Dazzler" a school bus full of kids drove past and had a good laugh at the stupid tourist (me).

We then checked out the Big Pick, shovel & Sieve, Big Sapphire ring, Big Spanner and Big Gem before driving the 45 minutes to Emerald.

In Emerald, we stopped at the Big Easel in Morton Park before making our way to the local grocery store to stock up on supplies for the next few days. We were heading into Carnarvon Gorge and there are no restaurants/cafe and the little store there is very expensive and has a bunch of supply issues as it is pretty remote. It is best to bring all your own supplies with you and cook in the well-equipped camp kitchen.

It is also really important that you fuel up in the last town before turning off the highway to enter Carnarvon Gorge, as there is no petrol available after this for about 250kms.

We stayed at the Takarakka Bush Resort in one of their Kookaburra Studios, which are the only air-conditioned option and definitely a necessity if you are travelling in the hotter months.

We arrived just before sunset and headed down to the Platypus Conservation Area on-site to try and spot some of these fuzzy critters. We didn't have to wait too long before we saw one splashing around.

We cooked our dinner in the camp kitchen and had an early night as we planned to get up at sunrise to get in/out of the gorge before it got too hot the following day.
