We hit the road after an early morning visit to the beach and came across the Big Aboriginal woman and her baby as our first "Big Thing" of the day at The Leap, which wasn't too far out of Mackay.
Airlie Beach is halfway between Mackay and Bowen and it's absolutely worth spending a couple of days here if you have not visited the Whitsundays before. We have been a couple of times in the past few years, so we chose to just pop in for lunch before continuing through to Bowen.
Bowen is home to the Big Mango, which was probably the most famous "Big Thing" we were visiting on this trip. The Big Mango is located at the visitor centre and inside you can buy the most delicious mango sorbet here.
We continued into Bowen and came across the second (smaller) Big Mango. I don't know why they need two, but there you go. #STRAYA
Our last Big Thing of the day was the Big Snake and Brolgas at Mullers Lagoon. This one was really hard to find as you had to go down a dirt driveway to find it. Our persistence paid off and we finally found it.
We did plan on having dinner at the hotel that the movie "Australia" was filmed in but it was closed, so we cooked our own dinner and enjoyed the sunset from just outside our room instead. We spent the night in a self-contained beachfront cabin that was right on the water.
