Ahhh Big Things - Australia sure has a strange fascination with them that can be hard to explain to foreigners! Our nation's quirky obsession with “big things” started well and truly before I was born. Most big things started their lives as tourist traps but now they are mostly just a great way to help break up long drives, of which there are many, in this big country of ours.
With two weeks off work approved for a cruise that was cancelled (because 2020), Noel and I were looking for something we could do in Queensland that we might not otherwise have done. We figured wanting to check out these wacky installations was a great excuse to plan a road trip around the state and that is exactly what we did.
I found a list of over 150 QLD big things on the internet and planned our entire trip around being able to see the maximum number of these possible, as well as check out some cool places we hadn't been before along the way. It was a pretty entertaining concept and I had a heap of fun putting it together!
We set off in mid-November and spent two full weeks exploring the official (and not so official) things that exist in the great state of Queensland. Here's what we got up to:
Before we left we also did a couple of practise day trips to check that the list we were working from was accurate/reliable and testing out our timings between things etc. If you aren't ready to commit to a full roadtrip these make fun day trips from Brisbane.
